DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD REALIZADA

Joan Cortiella es alfarero y elabora a mano todas sus piezas, siendo fiel a una tradición familiar que se remonta al siglo XVIII. En la actualidad, la alfarería J. Cortiella es la única que se mantiene en activo no sólo en La Galera, sino en toda la comarca del Montsià.Como también habían hecho tradicionalmente sus antepasados, fabrica piezas para uso doméstico, jardinería, etc., y piezas destinadas a la construcción. Este tipo de productos los fabricaban tradicionalmente en gran cantidad, hasta la aparición del plástico, el PVC y otros materiales sintéticos que, pese a ser menos duraderos, más contaminantes y de peor calidad, sustituyeron a la alfarería. Tanto que, durante unos años, dejaron prácticamente fabricar este tipo de piezas. Sin embargo, desde hace unos años, han vuelto a fabricar piezas para la construcción, bien sea para la rehabilitación de casas tradicionales o bien para la construcción de otras nuevas.Las piezas que fabrica están destinadas, fundamentalmente, al desagüe del agua, recogida de agua de lluvia (tubo, codos y tortugas), filtros y chimeneas decorativos. Son piezas realizadas totalmente a mano, con la ayuda del torno, y, a veces, con la ayuda de un molde de madera.

APRENDIZAJE

El actual alfarero, Joan Cortiella Garcia, viene de una estirpe de alfareros que trabajaron en La Galera de manera interrumpida desde el siglo XVIII.Fueron alfareros su padre (Juan Cortiella Martín, maestro artesano desde 2003), su abuelo, su bisabuelo, etc. Él es también Maestro Artesano Alfarero desde 2011, el máximo reconocimiento que otorga la Generalitat de Catalunya a un artesano.
