DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD REALIZADA

Dada la complejidad del oficio de cantero y que existen toda una serie de trabajos diversos ligados a él, como la realización de piezas en taller, tanto ornamentales como arquitectónicas o escultóricas; la colocación de dichos elementos en nueva construcción y rehabilitación; las restauraciones de elementos pétreos, etc., en muchos casos existe una especialización del trabajador en una disciplina concreta. En su caso, es cantero artesano o cantero de taller, especializado en la labra manual de cualquier tipo de elemento pétreo, ya sea vinculado con la arquitectura y la construcción (dovelas para arcos, distintas piezas para hórreos, preparación de sillares o piezas para cualquier tipo de aparejo, balaustres, todo tipo de molduras, basas, columnas, fustes, capiteles, elementos ornamentales vinculados con la arquitectura, como pueden ser los pináculos, cruces, fuentes, bancos y mobiliario urbano, etc.), o puramente artísticos.En los trabajos más complejos que desarrolla su intervención se ciñe a la realización de un número de piezas en taller y no a su colocación definitiva, aunque para comprobar su correcta realización, y que todo concuerda con el diseño requerido, se realiza una prueba de montaje en el taller.Trabaja de forma artesanal y siguiendo, básicamente, el mismo método que se ha utilizado a lo largo de la historia en la labra de la piedra. Por supuesto, ha introducido algunas innovaciones en cuanto a herramienta que facilitan su trabajo (como la radial, el martillo neumático, métodos auxiliares de elevación, etc.), pues no hay que olvidar que se trata de un material de una gran dureza (además, trabaja principalmente el granito), y su labra requiere mucho tiempo y esfuerzo físico. Pero en ningún caso estas herramientas sustituyen a las tradicionales del cantero cuando éstas aportan una mayor calidad. Sigue siendo una elaboración manual en la que ninguna parte del proceso ha sido automatizada excepto el corte de los bloques, dando lugar a piezas únicas, que son muestra de la pericia y el esfuerzo del cantero.En el desarrollo de esta labor, es muy importante conocer el grado de trabajo de una herramienta, es decir, hay que tener en cuenta el espesor de piedra que necesita una determinada herramienta para trabajar correctamente. Para la realización de las piezas siempre se parte de una idea, de un diseño previo, que se refleja de manera exacta en distintos planos. Cuando se necesita un gran número de piezas iguales para un trabajo (pasos de la escalera de caracol, dovelas del muro de esta misma escalera o del faro, la basa de las columnas pareadas) se recurre a plantillas a tamaño real, para asegurarse el correcto marcado de cada pieza y minimizar las diferencias que pueda haber entre ellas al finalizar su labra. Estas plantillas (realizadas en chapa de cinc en su caso) son esenciales, por ejemplo, en la realización de arcos y bóvedas. Los planos y plantillas son por tanto elementos imprescindibles para la elaboración de las piezas. En este proceso de diseño también se pueden elaborar contraplantillas (normalmente de chapa de madera) que ayudan a verificar, sobre todo en el caso de molduras complejas, que la pieza es fiel al diseño original.Tras este primer paso se procede a la propia labra del elemento, trechando (para salvar las aristas) con la ayuda de un cincel todas las líneas de contorno que definen la pieza. Se sigue después haciendo atacaduras y tiradas para trabajar los planos correctamente, comprobando continuamente con vara y escuadra el trabajo.Además de la labra de las piezas arquitectónicas, en muchos casos también se procede a realizar el sistema de anclaje de algunos elementos.En el levantamiento de muros, se limpia el terreno y se replantea según las medidas para hacer la cimentación. Una vez hecha la cimentación se comienza a levantar el muro, empezando siempre por las esquinas, y prestando mucha atención al perfecto aplomado de éste. Para ir levantando hiladas se ayuda de cordeles atados a unas guías metálicas colocadas en los ángulos, para controlar la alineación del muro. Para darle una mayor solidez al muro, cada dos o tres piezas en cada hilada se colocan piedras a tizón o perpiaños.

APRENDIZAJE

Comenzó su formación de Maestro Cantero en la Escola de Canteiros de Poio, Pontevedra, (2011-2016), con un método de aprendizaje eminentemente práctico, de taller. Actualmente está cursando el Certificado de Profesionalidad de la especialidad de Colocación de Piedra Natural, que consta de unas 800 horas e imparte el maestro Luis Vázquez Guntín.
Además, es licenciado en Historia del Arte, en la especialidad de Patrimonio Artístico (Univesidad de Santiago de Compostela, 2005-2010).
