DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD REALIZADA

En el Ayuntamiento de Irixoa hay una forja artesana en la que trabaja como herrero Álvaro Varela Rodríguez.El oficio de herrero es uno de los de mayor arraigo y tradición en Galicia. Los herreros abastecían a la sociedad de numerosos útiles, sobre todo de los de corte y labranza. Con el abaratamiento de los productos industriales se fue recortando el volumen de producción artesanal. En la actualidad, algunas tradiciones se van perdiendo, aunque este oficio se sigue manteniendo, pero dedicándose más a elementos decorativos y artísticos.En el proceso de elaboración del hierro Álvaro trabaja manteniendo el método artesanal. Su labor se desarrolla siempre, desde que se produce el encargo, según el siguiente proceso:– Se busca el material adecuado para el trabajo que se va a realizar.
– Se corta o reduce con la sierra, la cizalla… hasta conseguir el tamaño adecuado.
– Se eleva su temperatura en la fragua para poder darle forma.
– Comienza el modelado hasta lograr la forma final. Para esto se utilizan las tenazas, el yunque, el martillo… La forma que se pretende conseguir puede ser muy variada: curvada, estirada, doblada, acanalada, redondeada, achaflanada, etc. Durante este paso el material puede enfriar, con lo cual habría que volver a darle la temperatura adecuada (cuando el hierro se pone de color rojo), pero siempre sin llegar a fundir el hierro.
– Una vez finalizado el trabajo, a menudo hay que darle algún tipo de protección. Ésta puede realizarse pintando, lacando, galvanizando… con productos adecuados. Si se elige el galvanizado, luego hay que pintar para conseguir un buen acabado.En una forja se pueden encontrar los siguientes elementos:– La fragua, en que se proporciona aire al carbón para calentar el material. Debe estar en un lugar poco iluminado para así percibir mejor el color del material al aumentar la temperatura. En la fragua también existe una cubeta con agua (para enfriar el material, templar…) y una pala de carbón.
– También se utilizan tenazas, reglas graduadas, calibre, escuadra, punzón, cizalla, sierras, tijeras metálicas, yunque, desbarbadora, martillos, martillo mecánico, taladros de mano y de columna, brocas, limas, cepillos, púas metálicas…etc.Antiguamente, en muchos lugares el herrero era considerado una especie de mago (“feiticeiro” como se diría en Galicia), con poderes mágicos, que usaba los elementos básicos fuego y agua para convertir la materia. Hoy en día, ese aura mágica que rodeaba este oficio ha desaparecido, aunque persiste la idea de que el herrero es un maestro artesano con un talento codiciado. Álvaro Varela quiere poner su “grano de hierro” para que la forja artesana cobre cada vez más auge, y tenga más importancia el arte del hierro forjado y el oficio del herrero. Persiguiendo este objetivo, busca elaborar sus trabajos de forma totalmente artesanal.

APRENDIZAJE

Su formación es, sobre todo, autodidacta, aunque sus primeros pasos en la profesión fueron junto a Antonio S. M., conocido en Betanzos como “el mañas”. Realizaba entonces trabajos de soldadura, máquinas para hacer zuecos, pozos de barrena, etc. Luego, mientras realizaba el Servicio Militar, trabajó en el Parque y en Talleres de Artillería de La Coruña. Más tarde montó su propio taller y se fue especializando en la forja artesana.
