DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD REALIZADA

La máxima de Antonio Gandano es crear espacios habitables, realizados con mimo, haciendo uso de técnicas tradicionales y materiales naturales. Sus chozas están construidas con los materiales que más cerca se encuentren y por eso trabaja con diferentes tipos de pastos (cañas, cañotas, brezos, castañuelas, barrón, escoba, retama, centeno…). Toda la madera proviene de lugares donde se garantiza la repoblación, la piedra es del lugar donde se vaya a construir y la cal es de elaboración artesanal de las caleras de Morón. Desde el año 1989 ha actualizado algunas de las herramientas y materiales que utiliza a las necesidades de hoy en día, siendo uno de los principales continuadores de su oficio en nuestro país..La seguridad y la calidad de sus trabajos la garantizan las herramientas, el conocimiento adquirido día a día y la colaboración con otros maestros choceros del norte de Europa, con los que mantiene un contacto muy cercano, siendo además socio del club de los choceros franceses.En el año 2002 fue nombrado Maestro por los maestros que durante 13 años se encargaron de su aprendizaje.Antonio Gandano domina una amplia variedad de tipos de cubierta vegetal. La arquitectura popular cuenta con amplio abanico de cubiertas vegetales tradicionales a las que en cada región se le da un nombre: teitos en León y Asturias, pallozas en Galicia, barracas en Valencia, chozas de bálago en Cádiz, taínas, chozas marismeñas…. La diferencia está en la forma y la estructura del edificio (redondas, rectangulares…), con paredes de piedra, barro, o del mismo pasto.

APRENDIZAJE

Herencia de su familia paterna, su padre fue uno de los que le transmitieron el oficio. También un señor de La Muela y otros de Arcos de la Frontera. En trabajos de la cal, la tierra y paja le ha influido mucho el maestro Laurent Coquemont, con quien trabaja y colabora con mucha frecuencia.

DOCENCIA

Hoy en día cuenta con dos aprendices, que ya considera choceros, que llevan 8 y 5 años trabajando con él. Ha compartido sus conocimientos en varios cursos y ponencias en diversos eventos e instituciones, como por ejemplo en el Instituto del Patrimonio Histórico Andaluz, en el Museo de la Cal de Morón y en la finca La Algaba de Ronda, entre otros.
