DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD REALIZADA

Joan es maestro especialista en construcción de muros de contención de piedra seca, paredes secas de doble cara, empedrados en seco y otros trabajos en piedra seca desde hace veinticinco años. Suele trabajar junto a otro maestro y dos oficiales en la zona de la Sierra de Tramuntana. Actualmente trabajan para el Consell de Mallorca.Realizan paredes secas de doble cara, paredes para delimitar y cerrar fincas que constan de dos caras de piedras con un capa entre ellas rellena de piedras de tamaños menores. El espesor del muro suele ser aproximadamente 50-70 cm, dependiendo de la piedra que se encuentra en el lugar. Las paredes no se hacen a plomo, sino que suelen tener un poco de pendiente hacia dentro.
También han restaurado un tipo de construcción tradicional de la Sierra de Tramuntana llamado clot de neu o nevero, un gran agujero rectangular de unos 4×8 m excavado en el suelo con muros de pared seca que se utilizaba para almacenar la nieve durante meses. Entre los muros de este gran agujero de tamaño variable, la gente solía meter la nieve, la comprimía apisonándola, lo tapaban con carrizo para mantener la temperatura y cuando llegaba la primavera, lo cortaban en trozos y lo transportaban a distintos lugares de la isla. También se encuentran frecuentemente otras construcciones a su alrededor en las que se refugiaba la gente que trabajaba en la montaña.Otro tipo de construcción tradicional que han reconstruido son las barracas de carbonero, antiguas construcciones donde se refugiaban los carboneros cuando necesitaban permanecer largas temporadas en el lugar de trabajo para cuidar de la sitja. Se construyen con la técnica de piedra seca y constan de muros dobles con relleno de piedras de menor tamaño. Estas paredes tienen una altura media de un metro, planta circular de dos metros de diámetro y cubierta hecha con palos de madera y vegetación.También realizan otras construcciones, como hornos de pan, y más elementos de piedra en seco.El proceso llevado a cabo por Joan en sus trabajos, comienza siempre por la limpieza de la zona donde se va a trabajar. Esto conlleva la separación y selección de los materiales, diferenciando las piedras que se van a volver a utilizar, las piedras más pequeñas para el relleno del muro, la maleza y la tierra. A continuación, se excava hasta dejarla preparada para iniciar el trabajo de colocación de las piedras. En el caso de muros y paredes, siempre se empieza colocando las piedras más grandes y se va disminuyendo el tamaño según se avanza en altura. Si es necesario, se añaden piedras nuevas, a las que previamente se les da forma y se les hace una cara. Las piedras tienen forma cónica para conseguir la estabilidad del muro. La cara es la parte visible de la piedra y a cola es la parte que queda en el interior del muro.Los materiales que Joan utiliza son martillos de diferentes tamaños, macetas y punteros, picos, azadas, espuertas y cavec –para rellenar las espuertas-.

Joan aprendió el oficio gracias a sus maestros Guillem Bujosa, Xesc Pastor y Jaume Morell en la escuela de conservación de la naturaleza, en el bosque del Castillo de Bellver.
