DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD REALIZADA

José María realiza trabajos en esparto siguiendo un proceso totalmente artesanal. Él mismo recoge el esparto de la sierra, atándolo en ramilletes para facilitar su transporte. En los meses de verano y hasta octubre es cuando está en su mejor punto. A continuación lleva a cabo el secado del mismo, al sol o la sombra durante unos 20 días. Una vez que se va a trabajar para realizar una tira o una pleita, el esparto se debe sumergir durante 10 horas en agua, para conseguir que sea más dócil y maleable y no se parta al trabajarlo.Una vez se ha trenzado la tira de esparto, se corta a la medida deseada según la pieza que se vaya a utilizar. Se realiza después el cosido de las tiras hasta obtener el ancho deseado. Se utiliza para ello cuerda de sisal o pita, con ayuda de una aguja acerada. Para conseguir una pieza de un metro, por ejemplo, hacen falta unas 13 tiras, lo que supone realizar 12 costuras.El proceso de diseño también es importante. El cliente pide piezas de unas dimensiones y características concretas y hay que pensar cómo ejecutarlo, con papel y bolígrafo, y previendo cómo serán los remates. Se puede hacer casi cualquier cosa con esparto, pero han conocerse los límites de este material y saber desde el principio cómo se va a realizar.José María trabaja en mesas grandes, trenzando el esparto y cosiéndolo con cuerda de pita y una aguja acerada, usa cinta de carrocero para que el esparto cortado no se desate, gatos y pinzas de sujeción, tijeras aceradas, metro y otra utilería.

APRENDIZAJE

El abuelo de José María le introdujo en el oficio y él, de forma autodidacta, ha ido mejorando y aprendiendo para agilizar el proceso o mejorar las terminaciones y los remates. Las piezas que se realizaban antiguamente son mucho más rudas y rústicas. Con las mismas técnicas, este maestro consigue piezas más sutiles y cuidadas que son mejor valoradas por el cliente.
