DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD REALIZADA

Manuel lleva desde 1975 realizando trabajos como dorador y tallista en el mismo taller, situado en el emblemático barrio sevillano de Triana. Los trabajos que se realizan en el taller abarcan desde la realización y restauración de numerosos pasos de Semana Santa, hasta la construcción, restauración y montaje de retablos completos. Además de Manuel, trabajan en el taller dos oficiales y un peón.Manuel domina todas las técnicas relacionadas con la artesanía del dorado de la madera, como la carpintería, la talla, el propio dorado, la policromía y el estofado.La técnica del dorado al agua apenas ha sufrido cambios desde su origen. En el taller de Manuel utilizan materiales tradicionales: colas de origen animal –principalmente de pieles-, sulfato cálcico de la zona de Osuna (Sevilla), y pigmentos naturales, que mezclan utilizando las fórmulas magistrales enseñadas por sus maestros. Las maderas que más trabajan son el pino de Flandes y distintos tipos de cedro.Tras realizar y unir las piezas de carpintería y ejecutar la talla en la madera, Manuel aplica una mano de cola totín o cola de conejo y consolida las uniones de la estructura con una pasta de carbonato cálcico y cola de hueso. Una vez se seca la cola, aplica siete capas de estuco compuesto por cola y sulfato cálcico y las deja secar. Una vez retallado y lijado con rascadores, retira el polvo y le da una mano de labazo (agua-cola). Cuando éste se seca, procede al dorado de la talla. Comienza dándole cinco manos de bol –mezcla de arcillas especiales y templa-, aplicándolas cuidadosamente sin alterar las capas anteriores. Es necesario remover la mezcla constantemente y siempre en el mismo sentido. Pasadas veinticuatro horas, cuando la pieza está seca, se pasa el “perrillo” –pincel de cerda dura- para pulirla. Dada la delicadeza de esta técnica, Manuel evita tocar la pieza con sus manos, porque la grasa natural de las mismas podría perjudicar la adherencia del oro. También procura que no sufran ningún golpe con la zona metálica de la brocha. A continuación, aplica una templa especial de agua y cola a las zonas con acabado mate. Cuando ésta se ha secado, aplica el dorado. Existe oro fino con diferente número de quilates, espesor y color. Manuel emplea pan de oro de 23 3⁄4 quilates, triple espesor y 18 gramos, que alea con otro metal para incrementar su dureza. Para obtener otros acabados, también utiliza oro blanco o plata de ley. Con ayuda del pomazón y el cuchillo de dorar, pega cada hoja previamente mojada en agua de dorar, las adhiere y deja secar un día. Una vez seco, continúa con el bruñido, que consiste en sacar brillo al oro puliéndolo. Terminado el dorado, se pasa al policromado de los motivos florales, frutales y religiosos, que se suele hacer al temple o al óleo. Terminado el proceso de pintura, se cincelan algunos detalles y se limpia.
Las herramientas que utiliza para el dorado son: pinceles de doble punta, pinceles de caña de pluma, pomazón para extender el oro, bruñidores o piedras de ágata, “perrillos” y una pelonesa. Los materiales empleados son libros de oro, boles, colas y estuco.

APRENDIZAJE

Empezó como aprendiz en el mismo taller en el que continúa trabajando actualmente, bajo la dirección del maestro Antonio Sánchez González (autor de la restauración del retablo mayor de la Capilla de los Marineros, así como de otros retablos menores, el paso del Santísimo Cristo de las Tres Caídas y otras muchas obras de gran valor artístico). También han sido sus maestros Joaquín Bellido Serrano y Rafael Lirio.
