DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD REALIZADA

En este taller se realizan muy diferentes trabajos de carpintería, ya sean elementos arquitectónicos como vigas, canes, capiteles, artesonados sencillos, etc., o elementos de mobiliario y ebanistería. En este ámbito de la ebanistería, además del diseño y la elaboración de nuevas piezas conforme a las directrices del cliente, Miguel Ángel, también realiza restauraciones y réplicas de estos elementos.Sin embargo, en lo que este taller sobresale de forma singular es en la realización de carpinterías, como puertas, ventanas, balcones y galerías, y más concretamente por su dilatada experiencia en el diseño y realización de las renombradas puertas ecijanas, con características muy específicas y arraigadas en la región.El diseño de la puerta ecijana es más o menos complejo en función del número de centros o partes en las que se divide cada puerta. Lo normal es que tenga de 1 a 3 centros aunque hay bastantes casos de 4 y 5 de éstos. Estas puertas tradicionales tienen una estructura principal exterior, compuesta por largueros o cercos (derecha e izquierda) y caberos (arriba y abajo). El resto de elementos horizontales se llaman contracaberos y éstos se unen con piezas verticales o diagonales llamadas peinacerías. En los huecos que conforma esta estructura principal, se introducen los tableros o cuarterones que pueden estar tallados o fresados con una moldura perimetral. Esta estructura puede ser ajunquillada o achaflanada. En el primer caso, toda la estructura y peinacería es una moldura cuya entrecalle (parte central) solía pintarse con un color negro humo o verde muy oscuro. Para encajar todas las piezas ajunquilladas, se dejan unos huecos en los elementos verticales para ensamblar la espiga del cabero o contracabero, con una «tapa» que continúa la moldura. Las puertas que se realizan con este sistema se llaman «a la gitanilla». En el caso de las achaflanadas, estos elementos estructurales se rebajan en los bordes con unos chaflanes que no suelen llegar a los 45º y las uniones son más sencillas que en las realizadas “a la gitanilla”.Además, las puertas ecijanas tradicionales se caracterizan por tener orejeras de muy variadas formas, rectilíneas y curvilíneas, más o menos complejas. La función de estas orejeras era meramente ornamental.Miguel Ángel trabaja con madera de Pino Flandes o Pino Tea (menos común porque es mucho más dura) para la estructura, siendo los cuarterones de Cedro en el primer caso y de Roble en el segundo. En cuanto a las herramientas, trabaja con gubias, cepillos, lijas, etc., además de alguna maquinaria ligera que facilita la obtención de molduras y otros trabajos.Este taller, en 2011, fue el primero en ser reconocido con el distintivo de La Carta de Maestro Artesano en la categoría de ebanistería y artesonado mudéjar por la Junta de Andalucía.

APRENDIZAJE

Miguel Ángel Balmaseda entró en contacto con el oficio de carpintero a la temprana edad de 9 años, cuando empezó a ayudar en el taller a su padre, llegando a compaginar este trabajo con sus estudios hasta que finalizó los estudios preuniversitarios. A su vez, su padre heredó el oficio de su abuelo, por lo que pertenece a la tercera generación de una saga familiar dedicada a esta labor.
