El tejar de Horcajo Medianero es uno de los últimos tejares artesanos que quedan en España. Este oficio milenario, en su caso, se ha ido transmitiendo por herencia familiar desde hace incontables generaciones.En este tejar se elaboran tejas, ladrillos macizos y baldosas a partir de una mezcla de tierra que ellos mismos excavan en montes cercanos y transportan hasta el tejar. Allí se amasa la tierra con agua, como se ha hecho siempre, mediante las pisadas de un caballo sobre la mezcla en un pozo de unos dos metros de diámetro.A continuación, el artesano va dando forma una a una a las piezas prensándolas a mano en unos moldes llamados gradillas, de diferentes formas según el tipo de pieza que se haga. Según el tipo de pieza usan una mezcla diferente, con mayor proporción de tierra roja o de tierra negra.A medida que se van haciendo las piezas se extienden en hilera en el suelo para que se sequen al sol durante unas 12 horas. Posteriormente se colocan cuidadosamente amontonadas en un horno de leña donde se cuecen durante un par de días.Utilizan las técnicas tradicionales de siempre, y en este caso no han incorporado ninguna herramienta nueva, ni han necesitado integrar ningún otro tipo de cambio en el proceso.Este tejar trabaja por encargo y tienen una gran demanda tanto para restauración de patrimonio como para particulares. Además, venden también teja antigua de derribo que van acopiando.
