DESCRIPCIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD REALIZADA

La Teulera Can Benito está dirigida por Miquel Torres, tercera generación de ceramistas de la familia.La historia de esta empresa comenzó cuando el abuelo de Miquel fundó una alfarería en la que se vendía cerámica artesana popular, aunque por cuestiones de mercado viró su actividad a una alfarería más centrada en los materiales de construcción. Cuando Miquel heredó la empresa de su padre, quiso volver a los orígenes y dar un mayor valor a la artesanía popular, combinando en la actualidad la tradición con la modernidad.Su dedicación y buen hacer le permitió adquirir el título de “Mestre artesà teuler” nº 198 (Maestro artesano de la teja), así como el reconocimiento de la “Teulera de Can Benito” como empresa artesana nº 128, ambas cartas gestionadas por el Consell de Mallorca.Actualmente en la Teulera de Can Benito trabajan una decena de artesanos que colaboran codo con codo para conseguir dar un toque de calidad y distinción a todos y cada uno de los productos que elaboran, ya sean elementos decorativos o de la arquitectura tradicional. Gracias a ellos, quien se dirija a la Teulera de Can Benito podrá encontrar piezas tan variadas como murales cerámicos, baldosas, peldaños, azulejos, balaustres, bajantes de agua cerámicas…El saber hacer de estos artesanos y la gran versatilidad que éste les confiere les ha permitido destacar en el mercado, además de por obtener productos de calidad, por su capacidad para la reproducción de piezas antiguas, permitiendo que no se pierdan elementos tan emblemáticos como, por ejemplo, los florones de ventilación o los barrotes de balaustres de casas señoriales, contribuyendo a su promoción y revalorización. Además, los conocimientos técnicos y formales de barro cocido han posibilitado a la Teulera de Can Benito trabajar con prestigiosos arquitectos a quienes les han diseñado elementos y piezas a medida.Asimismo, cabe destacar que los productos que elaboran son productos sostenibles y de cercanía, pues toda la magia de esta cerámica comienza con la preparación del barro a partir de arcillas extraídas de un pueblo vecino.Muestra de su buen hacer ha sido la obtención del Premio a la Trayectoria Artesana de Mallorca del 2016, otorgado por el Consell de Mallorca, así como la nominación como finalista en los Premios Nacionales de Artesanía en la categoría de Premio Producto de 2015, organizados por Fundesarte.Miquel Torres es actualmente el presidente de la Associació de Teuleres de Mallorca (Asociación de Tejares de Mallorca), entidad que se dedica a velar por la profesión y por la arquitectura tradicional mallorquina.

De entre todos los trabajos, cabe destacar la participación en la construcción de la Sagrada Familia de Barcelona, la cubierta de la Lonja de Palma, los murales de Gustavo de Cala Ratjada, la recuperación de los balaustres de Raixa en Mallorca, y la colaboración con el despacho de interioristas Bloomintdesign.
